The journey into mindfulness at this stage of life—past the midpoint, with more years behind than ahead (my god, that sounds horrendous!!) — carries its own unique set of concerns and reflections. At 50plus, life’s worries seem to magnify: the health of our ageing parents, the loss of loved ones, personal health scares, the ebb and flow of wealth, and the ever-present demands of work. Like many men my age, I wake in the small hours of the morning, my mind a battleground of worries and what-ifs.

In the past, these nocturnal awakenings often meant abandoning any hope of returning to sleep; I would either descend into the quiet of my office to work or seek the mind-numbing distraction of television and YouTube, only to face the following day, exhausted yet strangely comforted by the thought that such fatigue would surely guarantee a better night’s sleep—only for the cycle to repeat itself.
